WEDDING

"The man who finds a wife finds a treasure and receives favor from the LORD" - Proverbs 18:22

Marriage is a divine institution ordained by God, and a basic building block of decent societies. Uniting man and woman in permanent bonds of love, marriage models the relationship between Christ and his bride, the Church, while furnishing a stable environment for the rearing of children.

The very first description of the nature of marriage in the Bible, as consisting of leaving, cleaving and becoming one flesh (Gen 2:24), reveals the Biblical understanding of marriage as a covenant relationship.

  • LEAVING - The first step in establishing a marriage covenant is leaving all other relationships, including the closest ones of father and mother:
"Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother" (Gen 2:24).
  • CLEAVING - The second essential component of a marriage covenant is cleaving:
"Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife" (Gen 2:24).
It is the idea of being permanently glued or joined together. Cleaving involves unswerving loyalty to one’s marital partner.
  • BECOME ONE FLESH - "Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Gen 2:24).
To become "one flesh" means to become one functioning unit. The becoming of "one flesh" is beautifully exemplified in the children of a married couple.
